If you were a superhero, what would your power be?
If I were a superhero, I would definitely want to be able to fly. I am rather fascinated with the idea of leaving the ground and soaring through the air; humans have done an amazing job in making aircraft, but it would be amazing just blast off whenever you wanted!
Do you have a personal hero? Who and why?
One of my biggest heroes would have to be my mum. She has, and continues to give up so much on a daily basis so that my brother and I have access to opportunities that she never had. Also, Jesus is a massive hero for me – to discover that some dude gave his life for me, someone he hadn’t even met is pretty massive. It’s more than anyone else has ever done for me.
Most Listened to CDs in your collection?
Up until quite recently, you wouldn’t catch me listening to much more than the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The sheer talent in song writing and playing that each band member has made every song so different, yet so good to listen to! Although I have recently broadened my listening quite a lot into awesome funky bands such as The Cat Empire, my favourite CD is One Hot Minute by the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Musical background:
I played piano as a young kid, but I never really enjoyed it. In year 7 I took up the saxophone, I enjoyed the instrument and the songs I could play but I eventually began to look for a different challenge. My brother had been playing guitar for a while, and one night he handed me the old family bass and taught me the bass line for ‘Are you gonna be my girl’ by JET.
From there, I just started learning the bass lines to songs that I liked, which really helped me develop as a musician. Throughout my time playing bass, Flea from the RHCP has remained one of my most solid influences. He has incredible stamina and stage presence, and his bass lines are complex but always funky as! Which is pretty cool for a dude who claims to have no musical theory knowledge at all!
What are you doing currently?
At the moment I am slogging away at an Aerospace engineering course at uni. It’s a tough course, but I love knowing how big machines work! I am also a youth leader at my local church, which I find such a fun and fulfilling way to spend my time.
How I came to know God:
I spent my younger years growing up in sunny ‘Bris-Vegas’ with my parents and my younger brother. My parents were Christians and I grew up going to church, but I didn’t see how it was worth it to have faith in something or someone I couldn’t even see. In the years to follow, I realised that something was missing in my life. It took me quite a while to realise that I was lonely, even around lots of people because I didn’t have a relationship with my creator, God!
At about the age of 16, I finally accepted that God was the thing I needed most in my life. Friends, relationships, and other things that promised me a sense of happiness and satisfaction just didn’t cut it. Since then, I have had no doubt that God does exist, and has been with me the whole time. I definitely reckon that God is worth checking out for yourself!
Gear:
I use a Fender American Jazz bass through a Mark Bass LMIII amplifier, into a Bergantino AE410 cabinet.
